Survey: Illinois Associations Ranked Among Industry's Top Employers, Salaries, Revenue Generators

CHICAGO – A new study, Associations Matter: Associations by the Numbers, released recently by the American Society of Association Executives & The Center for Association Leadership highlights the significant economic impact of associations on a national and state-by-state basis. Illinois ranks among the top four states for the number of professionals employed by associations, annual average wages paid and revenue generated by associations, according to the study.  Click here to read more.

Economic Impact Study of the Chicagoland Association Community

There are 1,733 1 voluntary membership organizations headquartered in the Chicagoland area. Chicago is home to more associations than any other region outside of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. 2

The gross annual revenue of Chicagoland associations is more than $9 billion. Chicagoland associations employ approximately 47,000 people, with a gross annual payroll of $3.3 billion 3. Average annual compensation of $70,000 per employee is similar to other professional fields, including architects, accountants, nurses and engineers 4

These organizations occupy 18 million square feet of office space (23 percent own the space they occupy) 5.

Chicagoland associations serve more than 37 million members and 9 million donors, worldwide 6.  In a recent national survey of associations, two-thirds reported that membership was expected to increase over the next 2 to 3 years 7.

In 2005-2006, they sponsored 1,075 trade shows, 6,672 board and committee meetings and 27,238 seminars, conferences, conventions and other meetings in the Chicago area. Ninety percent of Chicagoland-based associations hold meetings in the area every year 8.

The 2.1 million people attending these Chicago-based events 9 spent $1.7 billion for lodging, food, taxi cabs, entertainment and other activities during their visits 10. The visitors who attend these association-sponsored events accounted for 833,000 hotel "room nights" in Chicagoland hotels 11.

The spending by visitors who attend association-sponsored meetings in Chicagoland directly supports 19,000 jobs in the hospitality, transportation, retail, entertainment and food service industry in the region.  In addition, those who attend association-sponsored events generated $80 million in state tax receipts and $39 million for local tax coffers 12.

Because 75 percent of Chicagoland associations are national or international in scope, they also sponsored 5,102 trade shows, 7,379 board and committee meetings and 10,546 seminars, conferences, conventions and other meetings held outside of the Chicagoland area, around the world. These events were attended by 15 million people 13 who generated $11.5 billion in delegate expenditures14.
