Association Forum President & CEO Michelle Mason will discuss Forum’s Welcoming Environment research and where the industry is headed on its DE&I journey. Learn steps you can take to put your organization on the path towards creating a truly diverse and inclusive environment. In small groups, we will discuss some stumbling blocks on the road towards a Welcoming Environment and brainstorm how to eliminate them.

Michelle Mason

Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE, CEO & President, Association Forum

Michelle joined Association Forum as President and CEO in September 2014. She provides strategic leadership, fiscal responsibility, and successful delivery of member value.

Association Forum is the “association of associations” in Chicago. Founded in 1916. The association community in Chicagoland represents more than 1,700 associations, which in turn serves nearly 29 million individual members and spends an estimated $10.3 billion annually on meetings alone in the Chicagoland area. Next to Washington, DC, Chicago is the nation’s largest association headquarters city. Additionally, more healthcare associations are headquartered in Chicagoland than anywhere else.

Prior to Association Forum, Michelle served as a managing director at the American Society for Quality (ASQ). In this role, she concentrated on strategy, innovation, business development, membership development and engagement, advocacy, corporate social responsibility, and process improvement.

Prior to ASQ, Michelle served as vice president of strategic and future-focused research programs for the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) in Washington, D.C., where she served as lead for the best-selling publication, Seven Measures of Success:  What Remarkable Associations Do That Others Don’t.

Michelle is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), Six Sigma Champion, and Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA). She is an ASAE Fellow and an Aspen Institute Ideas Fellow. She is a graduate of the SmithBucklin Leadership Institute.  Michelle served as an examiner with the Wisconsin Center for Performance Excellence. She has a BA, MBA, and MS.

Michelle has strong board experience including, the American Society of Association Executives Board of Directors, ABSI, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, and Visit Milwaukee.  She was appointed by the Mayor of Milwaukee to serve as vice-chair of the City's Green Team. Michelle is currently a member of the Choose Chicago Board of Directors, a Mentor for the Chicago Urban League, and a Coach for One Million Degrees.

Michelle is a Chicago Business Journal Women of Influence Honoree 2019, Chicago Defender Women of Excellence Honoree 2019, and the CEO Update Professional Society CEO of the Year 2020.  She also received the 2012 WSAE Association Leadership Award and was recognized by Associations Now as an “A Lister: Someone Who Makes Associations Work.”

Kristen Butcher

Kristen Butcher, CMP, Executive Vice President, Illinois REALTORS

Kristen Butcher, CMP, is the Executive Vice President of the Illinois REALTORS. Prior to coming back to the Association Management field, she was the Director of Sales and Catering for the Hilton Springfield for more than thirteen years. She started her Association career as the Education Director for the Illinois Association of Park Districts from 1995-2001.

With the Illinois REALTORS®, she started as the Vice President of the Professional Development Department. Her team managed more than 30 meetings and special events as well oversaw the Associations 2,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose room at their headquarters. An additional branch of the department manages and administers a real estate school that offers pre-license and continuing education with more than 60 branches across the state.

In October 2019, Kristen was promoted to serve as the Executive Vice President for the Association. In this role, she manages the day-to-day operations and assists the CEO with special state and national programs and projects.   

In her spare time, Kristen enjoys cooking, working out, and spending time with friends and family.  She and her husband Joe reside in Springfield with their two sons, Benjamin and Reece.

Amy Beadle

Amy Beadle, Sales Manager, Visit Springfield

Amy is the Sales and Marketing Manager for the City of Springfield, Convention & Visitors Bureau.  Her role includes leading the sales and services team focused on recruiting meetings and conventions to Springfield from around the U.S., managing and executing the advertising and marketing plan for the department, and handling social media platforms to keep Springfield in the eyes and minds of potential visitors.

With more than 30 years of experience in the travel, hospitality, retail, and tourism industry in Springfield, Amy has built a network of connections and enjoys being a resource to connect, engage and provide mentoring and coaching to those new to the industry or to Springfield. 

Prior to working at Visit Springfield, Amy spent 8 years as the Marketing Leader for SCHEELS.  During this time a deep connection with area non-profits was established.  One of her proudest moments was receiving the Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary District 6460.  Continuing to support local charities has been a focus for her, including working with United Way of Central IL, Fishing Has No Boundaries, Habitat for Humanity Sangamon County, and serving on the board of directors for the Central IL Customer Service Association since it began in 2015.  Amy is actively engaged with IL Women in Leadership as a member and incoming chair of the IWIL Symposium, Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce as a member and committee volunteer, Springfield & Sangamon Growth Alliance as a Springfield Ally, and the Association of Women in Communication as a member.

Amy was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, moving to Springfield in 1987.  She has been married to Dave for 30 years and has one son, Tim, who is a sous chef at Panther Creek Country Club.   In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering, grilling, reading both professional material and an occasional non-fiction book, walking, and working in the yard.
